Throwback Thursday

I celebrate 31 years of running this month and as we were talking the other night the topic of PB's or PR's came up.

Back in the day I was fast! Yeah right...! I've never been fast but I did find this photo of me finishing my best marathon...03:49 - January 1997.

Happy running everyone!

How long have you been running?

  1. Wow that's super impressive - 31 years!! I hope I am running that long. I've only been running since 2008, so I guess 4 years...pales in comparison to you! Congrats!

  3. Congrats on your running anniversary, Johann!

I have been running since 2005. Before I began to run I had swum and played soccer.

  4. Wow! That's quite a running career. Mine started in 2005. I'm a newbie!

  5. I started running in 1993, during high school, but slacked off through my twenties with a few short running spurts of a few months. I made a lifestyle commitment 3 years ago and have been going strong every since.

  6. More than three decades of running - fantastic! I ran my first road race in 1985 at age 8 (just for the fun of it with my friends, of course), so its 27 years on and off for me :) .

  7. Amazing achievement Johann! I've been running on and off for about 22 years (unfortunately more off than on).

  9. Congrats to you! That's really cool that you've been at it so long. (Especially b/c you're only 34, right? ; )

I've been at it for 15 years now and can say it's part of the fabric of my life.

  10. Congrats on 31 years of running. A lot of people are afraid to run because they worry about the long term impact on their joints. I've read some articles that say running keeps your joints healthy and allows you to have a higher quality of life in the long term. You are proof that running smart allows you to run for many years. You should do a post on what worked for you (physical, mental, and long term passion) and what to avoid.

I ran most of my life but for sports (soccer, baseball, basketball,...). I ran my first marathon (3:48) in 2006 and never looked back.

Awesome pic of you - Leading the pack.

  17. That is great, love the picture! I ran my first marathon in 1997 - but it was a 3:59. My PB is 3:44 in 2009 so we are close :).

I hope you have at least another 31 years of running!

  18. I don't know which is more impressive - the PB or the fact that you've been running for 31 years. Actually your longevity as a runner probably wins by a nose.

  19. a 3:49 marathon is quite an accomplishment Johann. You are truly an awesome runner. I have a friend who has been at the front of the pack (in his youth) and now at the back of the pack (in his 70's), and he says that the back of the pack is WAY FUNNER. That's where you will find me. I suspect I will find you in the middle, if I can get there. Awesome legacy of running you have Johann!!!!! You have something geat about you!!

  20. Love the picture! Wow, you've been running a long time. I started running in 2010...just a baby. :)

  21. I always enjoy seeing your "throw back" pictures! You have been running for such a long time. I am not sure when to say my running started. There are big gaps between some of the sections. I ran a little in high school: a few weeks- to prep for soccer. Then again at the end of college for about 2 years, and then started to get serious about about 4 years ago.
